Dear Mr. Theodorakis,

1. How would you describe your musical work? It seems to me that it is much more than just beautiful music , but many time it contains sayings about human lives, society and human rights.

2. How would you describe your relationship with human suffer, in general ("z") and the Jewish people, as expressed in your work "Mauthausen"?

Σας ζητώ να με συγχωρήσετε για τη μακρηγορία μου. Όμως αυτό το κάνω για πρώτη φορά, για να σας ρωτήσω: Είναι ποτέ δυνατόν ένας Έλληνας που γνώρισε την κόλαση όπως οι περισσότεροι Έλληνες, να μην κατανοεί και να μη συγκινείται από το δράμα των Εβραίων; Και μάλιστα αυτών που υποφέρανε δέκα φορές περισσότερο από μας;

- Πού «εκεί»; Στο Ισραήλ;

- Ναι! Ναι!

- Μήπως κλαίτε κι εσείς γιατί  πήγα στο Ισραήλ;

- Ναι! Ναι! Ναι!

- Τότε γιατί δεν με ρωτάτε, τι είδα στο Ισραήλ;

- Τι είδες;

- Την ώρα της συνέντευξης τύπου τέσσερις Παλαιστίνιοι ήταν εκεί αποφασισμένοι να σε σκοτώσουν. Όταν όμως σε άκουσαν να μιλάς για το Ισραήλ και την ειρήνη, άλλαξαν γνώμη και ήρθαν να με βρουν. Μου είπαν “Αυτός δεν είναι πράκτορας του Ισραήλ. Μας μίλησε για αγάπη και ειρήνη και έδειξε ότι πονάει για μας αλλά και για τους Ισραηλινούς που θέλουν ειλικρινά να ζήσουν ειρηνικά μαζί μας”. Τώρα είναι στο διπλανό δωμάτιο και σε περιμένουν για να σου ζητήσουν να τους συγχωρήσεις. Θέλεις να πάμε;

Αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι θα πρέπει να συμφωνώ με την Κυβέρνηση του Ισραήλ. Υπάρχουν πολλές αποφάσεις και πράξεις που με βρίσκουν κάθετα αντίθετο. Όπως νομίζω, ότι βρίσκουν αντίθετους και πολλούς πολίτες της χώρας σας. Και γιατί να μην έχω το δικαίωμα να πω και σε σας αυτό που έλεγα και στους Παλαιστίνιους; Δηλαδή ότι η χρήση βίας οδηγεί παντού και πάντοτε σε αντίθετο αποτέλεσμα από το επιδιωκόμενο;

3. Recently, I discovered that you composed songs for children ("ta paidika mou tragoudia"). It was a pleasant surprise for me. I would love to hear more about it.

4. I personally know that you have many friends in Israel. But in recent years it seemed that some of your sayings about Israel were obtained by many Israelis as an expression of dislike to the Jewish people. Is it possible that the contribution to this is the fact that in Greek language you use the same word ("evrei") both for 'Jews' and for "Israelis"? Are you willing to clarify this point?

Μ.Θ. Νομίζω ότι σας μίλησα πιο πριν γι’ αυτή την διαστρέβλωση της αλήθειας. Φυσικά προσέχω πάντοτε όταν μιλώ για το Ισραήλ να αποκαλώ τους κατοίκους του Ισραηλίτες. Αλλά νομίζω ότι η θρησκεία όλων είναι η Εβραϊκή. Σε τι κάνω λάθος;

5. After the "The Golden Dawn" party entered the Greek Parliament, you wrote harshly about the bad image that was created to the Greek people around the world. Furthermore, you have mentioned the contribution of the Jews, in general, to the human society. You also spoke about the Jews of Thessaloniki. Would you like to add anything about it?

Μ.Θ. Όχι.

6. As a Greek, how do you see the state of your country today? Before the referendum you asked the people to vote "No". Are you satisfied with the results?

7. What do you think is coming up for Greece now? To which direction would you like to see your country go?

8. When I think about Mikis Theodorakis, I don't think only about a great artist, but also about a person who fights for his believes, is willing to pay the price for it, an ex-minister in Greek government etc. How would you describe yourself?

_________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Mr. Theodorakis,

1. How would you describe your musical work? It seems to me that it is much more than just beautiful music, but many time it contains sayings about human lives, society and human rights.

M.Th. Every noteworthy musical work expresses the potentials and the strength of its composer on managing his work, that is to say, on managing the original and strong inspiration, the power of imagination and the impeccability of the technique. As in every piece of Art, there is an ideal “Beautiful” and an also ideal level of emotion, both of which determine the quality of the musical work and, ultimately, its evaluation.

This introduction was made only in order to explain that there are uniform rules in every work of Art. Naturally, differences may coexist from time to time, from nation to nation and from artist to artist.

You ask me how I would describe my musical work. Based on what I just stated before, I believe that as a composer my efforts focused on merging two basic elements: Hellenity and the European musical heritage (mainly in my symphonic work) on the one hand. And on the other, my era, meaning my ideas, my people, the sufferings in my time- that is, the sufferings of all nations worldwide- and my faith as a citizen to Justice, Freedom and the Human Rights.

Maybe this aspect of the striving Citizen and his tough struggles against every form of authority that always and everywhere leads to barbarism, this aspect of my “being” (let’s call it ideological) has deeply affected my music. And this is a fact I don’t deny. On the contrary, I would say that I take pride in it.

2.How would you describe your relationship with human suffer, in general (“z”) and the Jewish people, as expressed in your work “Mauthausen”?

M.Th. I belong to a country and a people that have been victims of foreign authorities both in Europe and in the USA. Since the 1821 Revolution and our liberation from the Ottoman Turks and before we actually had the opportunity to breathe as free people, the Great Powers of the time, the English, the French and the Russian imposed the Bavarians on us followed by the reign of the Danish Glücksburgs. The 1912 revolution that gave rise to the first and last national leader, Eleftherios Venizelos, had as a result the liberation of the remaining eight tenths of the country that were still under turkish occupation. But the “Greats” couldn’t let us be: the English and the French helped the Turks slaughter and throw into the sea three million Greeks who had been living in the west coasts of Turkey for hundreds of thousands of years.

In 1940 the Italian fascists of Mussolini attacked us through Albania, a country they had already conquered. We managed to militarily defeat them and then Hitler, in order to support Mussolini, invaded, with Wehrmacht and the SS military forces, and occupied the continental Greece at first and Crete afterwards. From 1941 to 1944 the Germans destroyed the country and killed one million Greeks, among which fifty thousand Jews from Thessaloniki. We formed the National Resistance Front (‘EAM’) and created the National People’s Liberating Army (‘ELAS’) that numbered a hundred thousand partisans in total both in the mountains and in Athens. We fought them day and night and we forced them to keep 16 Army Divisions in Greece, the absence of which at the East Front was important. The Germans left in October 1944 and in December of the same year came the English against whom we fought in Athens as well. I personally am very proud for the fact that I participated in this uneven battle for the 33 days it lasted.

For we only had hand guns and a few machine guns in our possession, while they had fighter planes and tanks at their disposal. In the end the English won the battle and immediately formed 150 groups from German collaborators who started burning entire villages and torturing and slaughtering simple partisans and their families, while at the same time the puppet-governments of the English were imprisoning and executing us.

There were tens of thousands of victims. But the worst part was that they forced us into the mountains for salvation which as a result had us enter into the worst of all wars, the Civil War, during which I was captured and exiled to Ikaria island. The islands and the prisons were filled with more than 50 thousand prisoners. On Makronisos island they had created a Greek Mauthausen where they wouldn’t burn us alive but they would torture us. I have also lived that hell, an experience that has left me heavily traumatized until today.

I ask you to forgive me for my long speech. But I do so for the first time and so that I may ask you the following question: is it ever possible for a Greek who met the hell, as most Greeks have, not to be able to understand and be affected by the Jews’ drama? Especially since they suffered ten times more than us?

When I was little, I lived in Giannena where there was a significant community of Greek-Jews or Jew-Greeks. They were my best friends and I never perceived any difference among us. During the German occupation hundreds of houses were hiding Jews. Like I said before, at that time I was a partisan and one of our tasks was the protection of these houses. We would have a battle every time Gestapo with the assistance of Greek traitors discovered such a house. We had many casualties. But I do not remember them ever managing to take a Jewish family that was hiding in any of those houses. On the contrary, it was us who took them and moved them to other houses. Furthermore, those Jews that hid in the mountains lived alongside with partisans and returned to Athens as free men. An example of this case was the family of Minos Matsas who later established the largest Greek record and CDs production company. Besides, the National People’s Liberating Army proposed to the Jews of Thessaloniki to accommodate them in the mountains, but the Rabbi didn’t believe that the Germans would put them on trains to Auschwitz.

But I think I have said too much and I only hope that you and your listeners will find my narration interesting. And because I can imagine that you do not have too much time at your disposal, I would prefer if I stopped at this point because I only wanted for as many Israelis as possible to get to know these facts.

I will therefore close my answer by narrating an unknown to you story:

In 1977 I broke through the Europeans’ embargo and visited Israel in order to hold some concerts. What passion! What love! What contentment and enthusiasm! Only imagine that we held three concerts a day at the Galilea Kibbutz. When the concerts were over I remember dining with the Minister Ya’alon who at some point told me while pointing towards the Lebanese mountains: “Tomorrow you will be behind these mountains, in Beirut. I would like you to meet Arafat and tell him on the behalf of my government that the only thing that separates us is a table! We could peacefully discuss our differences. And please also tell him that no one can throw us by force into the sea and feed us to the sharks.

The next day my publisher in Beirut had organized a press conference for a book of mine which was about to circulate translated to Arabic. In the meantime one of my songs was first in sales and apparently I had become a popular…star for the youth! While descending the staircase of my hotel on the way to the press conference I realized that the hall was filled with boys and girls who were waiting to get my autograph. While signing I was taken aback by the fact that most of these youngsters were in tears! So I stopped and asked in French (in Lebanon at that time they also spoke French) the reason for which they were shedding tears. Then a girl told me:

-  Because you went “there”!

-  Where is “there”? In Israel?

-  Yes! Yes! Yes! All the youngsters exclaimed in unison.

When I arrived at the restaurant where the press conference was due to be held, the atmosphere was heavy. Many people were tearful. When the interview was over, I stood up and asked them:

-   Is there a chance you also are tearful because I visited Israel?

-   Yes! Yes! Yes!

-   Then why don’t you ask me what I saw in Israel?

-   What did you see?

-   I saw people tall and short, blonds and brunets, fat and thin, like everyone in any other country. Like here, in Lebanon. But I also saw something else which is of great importance. You know, in Israel people talk freely and that is how I realized that more than half of them desire peace. And I think that you are at fault when you carry out frontal assaults because in that way you urge them to participate in the coalition of those aspiring to war. If you wish for ever returning to your homes, I said addressing to the Palestinians, you will have to discuss peacefully with those that stand for peace.

Then an Arab said:

-  Mikis is right. We are opposing to Israel and are not realizing our own mess, that those who are in power do as they please without ever asking us about our opinion.

As you understand, a pandemonium prevailed: everybody forgot about Israel and started to argue with one another.

The day after I was led to Arafat’s hideout. The whole P.L.O. leadership was there waiting for me to which I delivered Ya’alon’s message.

But beforehand, Arafat led me to another room where he told me:

-  During the press conference you held, four Palestinians were there ready to kill you. But when they heard your speech on Israel and peace they had a change of mind and came to find me. They told me that “this man is not an Israeli agent. He talked about love and peace and proved to us that he sympathizes both with us and the Israelis who honestly want to live in peace with us”. These people are now in the room next door waiting to ask for your forgiveness. Would you like to go to them?

-  Of course, I replied.

As soon as the room’s door opened and we entered, all four of them ran crying to me and were kissing my hand.

-  You are a good person and we almost killed you.

I embraced them in turn and told them:

-  I am Greek and as a Greek I carry a great deal of suffering inside me. Suffering for every people and every human.

Then Arafat told me:

-  With Mauthausen you exalted the Jews. You did well, because their nation has suffered a lot. But we Palestinians do live in suffering as well. This is the reason for which I ask you, please, to compose music for our people too.

Conclusion: What can be the reason for telling you all this? To prove to you that I feel ashamed for the fact that I was numerous times forced to apologize for something I never was! I was, still am and will be a friend of Israel.

This of course doesn’t mean that I am obliged to agree with the government of Israel. There is a plethora of decisions and actions with which I completely disagree, as I think so do many citizens of your country. And why do I not have the right to tell you exactly what I told the Palestinians? That the use of violence always and everywhere leads to the contradictory of the intended result? The way I denounce the extreme Palestinians that do not acknowledge you and wish for your death, the same way I disagree with the extreme Israelis that seek for the extinction of the Palestinians. War is always horrible. The only “good” and justified war is the defensive war; in contradiction to the bad and unacceptable kind of war: the aggressive one.

But I am not only a friend of Israel but an avid admirer of the Jewish people as well, which, as us Greeks, are a pillar of western civilization. You with the Bible, and by that I mean the ethics, and us with the Democracy and the Art; together we have created the essence of the western man. You have offered a great deal, especially to the modern civilization. After all, the three personalities that radically changed Humanity were Jews: Jesus Christ, Karl Marx and Albert Einstein. But the field in which you excelled and prevailed is of course that of symphony music. You gave life to Mendelssohn and Mahler and to the greatest music interpreters.

But what did really happen to my relationship with your people? Your big national problem and by that I mean your relations to the Palestinians. As you are probably already aware, I have visited Israel numerous times and gained a lot of friends both as a musician and as an idealist politician. For my ideas on a peaceful solution and their impact on your country, at a time when the same ideas were common belief among at least half the population, I was deemed as a persona non grata for the violence supporters. The fact also that my music was loved by your people rendered me very dangerous to them. This is after all the reason for which they used their ultimate weapon against me, slander, in order to turn me into a hated person to all Jews, not only in Israel but throughout the world. And that is the plain and unvarnished truth.

I now find myself approaching the end of my life and therefore I have no reason or advantage whatsoever in defending my love and admiration towards your people. Let’s consider this interview as my last on the matter. The rest, and by that I mean the truth, will be reminded, for many years I hope, by the Mauthausen cantata, which was born through the blood of my heart, as has all the music I ever wrote.

3. Recently, I discovered that you composed songs for children (“ta paidika mou tragoudia”). It was a pleasant surprise for me. I would love to hear more about it.

M.Th. I name them “Songs for Children” because I composed most of them when I was a child of 12-15 years old. The others were composed at a slightly older age but are addressed to children. You can listen to them, as well as to my complete works, at my personal webpage (mikistheodorakis.gr).

4. I personally know that you have many friends in Israel. But in recent years it seemed that som of your sayings about Israel were obtained by many Israelis as an expression of dislike to the Jewish people. Is it possible that the contribution to this is the fact that in Greek language you use the same word (“evrei”) both for ‘Jews’ and for ‘Israelis’?Are you willing to clarify this point?

M.Th. I think I already elaborated on this sort of truth distortion above. It goes without saying that I am always careful to mind that when I talk about Israel I refer to its inhabitants as Israelis. But I think that everyone’s religion is Jewish. Am I mistaken at something?

5. After the “Golden Dawn” party entered the Greek Parliament, you wrote harshly about the bad image that was created to the Greek people around the world. Furthermore, you have mentioned the contribution of the Jews, in general, to the human society. You also spoke about the Jews of Thessaloniki. Would you like to add anything about it?

M.Th. No.

6. As a Greek how do you see the state of your country today? Before the referendum you asked the people to vote “No”. Are you satisfied with the results?

M.Th. The big crisis into which we were plunged, again by the foreign powers, has had until today devastating consequences. The public debt rates were nothing but a mere pretext. If my memory serves me correctly, the USA public debt is estimated at 11 trillion and Germany’s at 3 trillion. The goal of the foreign powers is to exhaust our people because they stand in their way of their grand scheme to obtain 100% of our significant natural wealth which lies in our mountains and in the bed of our seas. Besides, for decades they have been forbidding us to exploit it ourselves…How? Especially after the Civil War (1943-1945) they have managed to turn our country into a protectorate. An indication of this is the fact that the USA has been determining our foreign policy (Diplomacy), the national army (Defense), the political life and our economy.

Today, after the election of the Left wing Government from our people, the measures imposed on us are crushing! And I am therefore certain that the people’s resistance will be increasing with each day passing.

The big NO of the Greek people frightened not only the foreigners but also our “leftist” Prime Minister who rushed into saying the great YES and signing the Eurogroup’ s tough measures. As a consequence of these actions, the current 61% of “NO” will rise eventually to 90%. Anyone who is familiar with our recent history surely knows how this increase will be demonstrated.

Nevertheless we are witnessing a negative situation: the presence of the Golden Dawn, a presence which we have to take into serious consideration since it not only distorts the resistance of the Greek people but is also foreign to our historical culture and tradition. This wing idealizes the German experience of Hitler’s accession to power, through the intimidation of the people by the military organization of its supporters (the notorious Nazi SA) combined with the wing’s participation in the Greek Parliament that constitutes a legal-like cloak. And one thing is certain, that the current crisis will only increase its power. What will therefore happen at the moment when the people will rise up against this situation? The Golden Dawn, having a significant number of arms lying hidden and a great influence on the armed forces (principally on the police), can alter the character of people’s resistance and transform it into a new civil war. For this reason we need to be extremely careful since we have to struggle against two fronts.

7.When I think about Mikis Theodorakis, I don’t think only about a great artist, but also about a person who fights for his beliefs, is willing to pay the price for it, an ex-minister in Greek government etc. How would you describe yourself?

M.Th. Above all, as a Patriot Peoples Fighter.
